Additional information

Rectangular Neo-Renaissance-style box in reddish-brown enameled copper, highlighted with grisaille and gilded fillets. The dome-shaped hinged lid features a rich enameled and painted relief decoration. It is decorated with a four-lobed medallion depicting a woman in profile in 16th-century costume, as evidenced by the richness of the strawberry. The medallion is surrounded by foliage in relief. On the casket's frame, four-lobed medallions feature either a fleur-de-lys or an interlaced monogram "HD" for Henri II and his mistress Diane de Poitiers. The interior is fully enameled, with gold highlights. This casket is a fine example of the Neo-Renaissance style that developed from the Restoration onwards. The Renaissance style thus developed in the decorative arts, enabling the revival of techniques such as enamel on copper. Some wear to the enamel.
