Alternate Text

Beautiful oval snuffbox decorated with green enamel. The hinged lid is decorated with a fine geometric “barley grain” pattern and covered with translucent green enamel. In the center is a multicolored enamel medallion featuring the portrait of a young woman in a yellow dress and mauve wrap. She is wearing a hat with yellow feathers over a crown of roses set on her naturally descending hair. A landscape is lightly sketched behind her. The composition is framed with a frieze of leaves and stylized flowers highlighted with multicolored and opalescent enamel on a matte gold background. The body of the box is composed of four green enamel panels that are interspaced with varying motifs: a basket of flowers, a cage and a dove, musical instruments, and a quiver and heart. These images are symbolic of Cupid and Hymen and underscore the sentimental value of this piece.
