Exceptional mantel clock from the Napoleon III period richly decorated with gilt bronze foliage, garlands, ovals, and ribbons. Multicolored panels embellished with the signs of the zodiac as well as mythological characters, symbolize the division of time and complete the lively composition. A vase sits atop the clock featuring Aurora, the goddess of the dawn, who is tossing out rose petals in the company of a young Cupid who is holding a torch to drive back the darkness. Under the clock's face is a young, bare-chested woman who represents Twilight and the arrival of night. Four medallions on the sides represent the four seasons. All of these symbols are set around the central medallion decorating the clock face which features Chronos, the god of Time. The clock is set on six, foliated toupie feet.
