Additional information

Rare micromosaic plaque depicting an idyllic Roman landscape. The main subject of this micromosaic is the representation of buildings surrounded by cypresses and trees. Two figures in the foreground are resting. This landscape, with a tree in the foreground and figures in a misty background, is reminiscent of the Arcadian or capriccio landscapes painted by Claude Gelée, known as Le Lorrain. The square shape of the shards making up the sky means that this work dates from the late 18th century. This plaque is set in a 18 carat gold frame and is closed at the back by a tortoiseshell plate.
