Alternate Text

Rectangular snuff box with angled corners and intricately patterned gold and enamel. The hinged lid is decorated with a half-circle medallion featuring a landscape. In the foreground, a group of fishermen and women are standing on the shores of a lake. In the distance the ruins of a castle look out onto the lake. In the hazy and mountainous background, a city with its bell tower can be seen.
This composition is reminiscent of those painted by Pierre-Louis de la Rive, a Genevan artist from the late-18th century. This unsigned composition, which also evokes the work of Jean-Louis Richter (1766-1841), is framed with a band of black enamel. The same pattern in gold from the lid of parallel stripes alternating with a leaf motif set on a sky blue background is repeated on the sides and bottom of the box.
