Large pair of Louis XVI style vases in green veined marble and gilt bronze mountings. Each vase has two finely chiselled ormolu handles decorated with foliage resting on faun heads. Large garlands of flowers decorate the vases. Each vase rests on a pedestal with twisted flutes, acanthus leaves and small pearls raised by a square base decorated with a frieze of pearls.
These marble and bronze vases are characteristic of the historical style that developed during the Second Empire. Indeed, the Empress Eugenie, a fervent admirer of the Louis XVI style, had many imperial residences refurnished and redecorated, thus influencing the decorative arts.
