Additional information

Rectangular gift box in yellow gold and enamel. The hinged lid is decorated in the centre with an oval medallion bearing the monogram of Ferdinand Philippe Louis, Duke of Orléans and surmounted by a royal crown. The monogram and crown are enhanced by royal blue enamel. A rich foliate decoration contrasts with the amati background of the medallion at the top. The base is decorated with the same ornamental motif in the form of a bent branch with leaves and surrounds a guilloche rectangle with wavelets. This type of snuffbox was given by a member of the royal family as a token of thanks. The Duke of Orléans, Ferdinand Philippe Louis (1810-1842), eldest son of King Louis-Philippe I, had a brilliant military career before his tragic death on 13 July 1842 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. "Poor Prince! What a dream at his last moments! Musset.
Charles X period.
