Additional information

Rectangular gold and silver pendant depicting a winged beetle in a fine pearl frame, the corners of which are decorated with lotus leaf motifs. The beetle is entirely set with sapphire, emerald and diamond stones. It is topped by a cabochon-mounted sapphire disc. Gold 14 carats. Circa 1920-1930.
This pendant is typical of the jewellery produced in the 1920s. Indeed, with the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Lord Carnarvon in 1922, Egyptomania developed in the art of jewellery. The winged scarab holding the solar disc between its legs embodies the solar god Ra, symbol of rebirth and protection. This scarab is strongly influenced by the pectoral found in Tutankhamen's tomb.
