Additional information

A set of six green opaline bowl with enamel and gold highlights. The centre of each plate is decorated with exotic birds on polychrome branches and enhanced with gold. The rim is decorated with foliage and flowers. Slight wear to the gilding. Circa:1840.

From a family of porcelain painters at the Manufacture de Sèvres, Jean-François Robert perfected the technique of crystal painting. On March 6, 1838, he obtained a patent for his processes for coloring crystals in vitrified colors. From 1837 to 1855, Jean-François Robert ran the main opal half-crystal decoration workshop, until 1843. He then became the official decorator for Launay, Hautin & Compagnie. Remarkable for the execution and richness of their subjects, Robert's decorations feature abundant, brilliant and very solid gilding. Characteristic of this workshop are the decorations depicting landscapes, animals and birds associated with plants, or flowering branches and Japanese-inspired bouquets. Jean-François Robert's workshop closed in 1855.
