Additional information

A gilt bronze and porcelain box with a hinged lid. The chased bronze frame, decorated with foliage, flowers, leaves and fruit, holds porcelain plaques enamelled with monochrome designs on a blue background. They feature putti playing, lying on the grass, dreaming or reading, and musical trophies. The top of the lid features a woman reclining next to a lamb in ormolu. Signed SIRAUDIN, 17 rue de la paix. Interior upholstered in midnight blue fabric.

Paul Siraudin (1812-1883). This box probably comes from the house set up by Pierre Paul Désiré SIRAUDIN (1812-1883), a playwright and librettist whose other passion was commerce, a passion he fulfilled by opening a shop at 17 rue de la paix. A prestigious location in Paris under Napoleon III, it sold confectionery selected by Mr Siraudin, a poet and chocolate confectioner. The company offered the most luxurious gift-wrapping.
